YI Camera Fail

You can operate the camera without the app. All that the app does is to let you see what the camera is seeing. Since it has a wide angle lens, it's not terribly crucial exactly how you position it above the board. You can do a bit of experimenting till you get it right and then just set it up the same way each time. By the way, the phone app won't work unless you hook it up to Yi's built-in wi-fi. This vid (a few years old) explains pretty well how to work the camera without the app and there are lots of others on Youtube as well.
