In Response To: Ouch... dat resign blunder tho. (Albert Steg)

For instance, what if the time-out were logged as a premature resignation for the current game only

In some cases penalty would be close to zero or just zero. For example, in bear-off when chances of winning are very low or nonexistent. This doesn't sound like a middle way to me.

XG doesn't require a match to be completed in order to be included in the calculations, does it? You are right. XG does not require match to be completed. BMAB stats software will not be able to figure out the result. I am not sure how important this is right now.

It might be interesting to see what the hit to the match and overall PR rating would be for these two instances.

I am not going to check it, but I can say that Julius would lose about 1 EMG and Frank about 1.85 EMG. Divide that by decisions in 300 EP (that is about 5000 I guess) and multiply by 500 to get PR loss. So,about 0.1 for Julius and 0.185 for Frank.

If that is not deemed sufficiently costly, perhaps the resultant loss due to time-out could be capped at something like 1 or 2 PR on your overall rating for the current 300 EP -- so if you were a 6 PR going into the match, the worst the time-out could hurt you is to drive you down to 8PR (or it could be a proportional thing, like 25% of current PR). This would probably mess up your database I guess, but maybe there would be a way to artificially modify the match file so the overall cost was mitigated.

BMAB system is set in a way so it automatically calculates PRs from matches. I am not saying it is not possible to make some adjustments, but I don't think they are needed. Also, as you may have guessed from previous example, adding 2 PR to last 300 EP is way more than those time-outs worth in majority of cases. There are plenty of other problems as well. What if time-out happens at 8-8/9? You still penalize 1-2 extra PRs? Adding percentages of PRs has all previous problems and some extra ones involving programming.

I agree with Stick though that it's not good for the integrity of your ratings system to allow 'do overs' or vaguely defined exceptions. Timing out is something that happens often enough that it deserves a clear policy in terms of how it's handled.

I would not be so quick to agree with him ;-) Stick just likes to call others a donkey. As far as I remember, there has been only one case where BMAB allowed a reset due to a time-out since 2015. I don't see this as a big problem. Do you? I will tell something else. BMAB rules were voted on by a lot of players and no matter what Stick you or I think of them, our opinions are not bigger than opinions of those voters combined. If you think BMAB can improve, you can suggest a rule change. BMAB Executive Panel will review such requests. If we think the issue is very important, we may ask BMAB Steering Committee to vote. So, there is a process and it doesn't start with someone screaming "Donkeys".
