Thanks for posting this, Tim, but I'm not quite grasping the practical implications here. As you point out, there are going to be plenty of situations where playing for the 3/5/7 spares is substantially worse than 4/5/6 ... and you've shown us a position where 3/5/7 is correct by a tiny hair.

But if this is going to be useful as a reference position, I'd think there would have to be positions where 3/5/7 is substantially better, right? Otherwise, you've just pretty much affirmed the general superiority of 4/5/6.

Am I thinking about this wrong? What sort of factors should motivate me to play for leaving spares on 3/5/7?
