I think the answer is pretty clear: No, this is a *very* reasonable expectation.
If you buy a monster graphics card (or whatever costly component) and your PC dies, woudln't it be nuts to have to throw it away?
my 2 pennies:
- it seems to me, that the financial motivation of some BG related actvities has risen in the last years. Digigammon calls themselves "backgammon enthusiasts" and charges 1000 bucks (bound to a single machine). But they also say: "Help to make digigammon free and open source". If they make it free when they collected about 91k why lock the SW to the hardware? It's beyond me, maybe becuase I'm not a native speaker.
- There was Snowie which was a bit on the expensive side. I'm not very interested in copy protection stuff, but I'm confident that Digigammon will motivate some guys to get it without paying.
