It sounds like a tall order to try to read someone else's code and develop it further if the sole developer is not willing to answer any questions about it. I hope the people who are considering buying XG know what they are getting themselves into and have an accurate understanding of the pros and cons of XG versus GNU Backgammon.

Deep Mind is the wrong group to approach if someone is interested in developing an Alpha Backgammon. The principles behind AlphaZero have been largely assimilated by the wider machine learning community by this point. You might have better luck asking the developers of Leela Chess Zero or KataGo. Even if those people are not personally interested, they are probably willing to talk, and might have suggestions about who might be interested in such a project.
