If you think about the effort put into XG the price is perhaps reasonable (say 10 years and $100k/year) but unfortunately I don't think it is possible to get back everything you put into a product but have to look at the value of the product as it is.

I haven't bought many companies recently but say you make $100k/year off a product and you expect it to easily have 10 years lifespan left before it becomes obsolete. That would still take many years before you could hope to see any profit from buying that product.

Also you are not buying a company with developers who can bring the product forward. Taking XG further would require some very skilled developers and they don't come cheap!

Some products/companies are sold for mental sums where the company itself hardly makes any money. Potential revenue growth is perhaps another factor. I don't think XG falls into this category though.

The risk of buying a product and expect it to dominate the market for many years to come is that a better product comes along and makes your product obsolete. Not that many competitors are showing up for XG at the moment but you would think the computing power has increased significantly over the last 10 years to make it a possibility.

But it is also a matter of skill and I think it is quite a challenge to come up with a better backgammon bot and if you do have the skill you'd think it would be better to focus on something that has massively higher chance of return of interest. Just create a company and call it something with AI LLM in the name and it will be valuated at billions overnight! :-)

One interesting thread came along some time ago: https://github.com/deepmind/open_spiel/issues/774 but it appears to have ended.

Someone should pitch backgammon/XG to Elon Musk and he'll buy it in an instant! Then mention Heroes in the next sentence! hehe

I don't think it was mentioned but buying XG would also include buying the server that is used to provide XG analysis to Backgammon Galaxy? That could make me interested! hehe but I'm afraid the cost would be too high anyway.

Best regards,
TP
