I understand x-22's argument like this - if the gammon is unsure (I never met 50-50 term and i like it) then try to tip the balance by trying to prevent gammon - bear in exact. This approach applies to other choices Magriel discussed too. Something like - when to take additional risks. But the problem of GS or play to win consists of other factors as gammon price, the size of the sacrifice (i.e.) an ace or a 5. Place of our anchor - deuce point wins about 15% here, Bulgarian 3 point = about 10%, 4 point - about 4%. etc. The anchor position also affects gammons - higher anchors also mean less gammons - both reducing gammon count and wastage. Margiel only used Gammon count. My question is if anyone remembers an article about the choice whether to play GS or play to win in opponent bear-in positions.
