It's commonly accepted that 100 elo in backgammon is around 3 PR. Wasn't clear if you knew that already or not.
I didn't. Thanks.
That being said, I agree with a lot of such plays/decisions. I've never really seen a world class + backgammon player adjust how they're supposed to in my mind. I think the fear of having a bad PR keeps all these types of players at bay in that sense because you will put up some high PRs (for a WC player) if you properly adjust.
You clearly didn't watch many of my matches, at least not against non-WC-level players.
I totally agree with your football analysis. Even if you have the rare coach that understands the right call, he is afraid to make it because he might get fired by the guy who doesn't and/or get bad press from those (meaning most) who are similarly confused.
When I was playing a lot of beach volleyball (doubles), if we got well behind in the match, I knew 100% that the optimal approach was to pull out my wild roundhouse serve. If I got it going, it could create great runs.
My regular partners ultimately became unquestionably convinced of this approach. Unfamiliar partners, OTOH, were very skittish of the notion, even if they had seen my roundhouse work!
I would always ask my partner first if they minded, in the interest of creating volatility and creating the best winning chances. If I sensed objection or hesitation on his part, I wouldn't do it. The social price was too high if I failed.
From my observation and experience, people have an irrational belief that if they can just focus on keeping the game somewhat close or guard against getting further behind, the winning chances will conjure up themselves.
