No shocker here, the plays are super close and you couldn't make a real mistake if you tried. Tim says "The "standard" play here is bar/14 ..." While John says "QF suggests either B/14 or ..." To me that reads as in this type of situation Tim by default is playing the front checker whereas John is playing the checker currently on the 21pt. (correct me if I'm wrong Tim/John)
That's the main reason I posted this. I have a fairly large collection of these and while it often doesn't matter too much (generally I'd say .030 or less) from time to time it can matter a bit more and we don't need to be making small errors anyway if we can avoid it. Also, a lot of small errors add up to big ones. Your default should be bar/14 disconnecting the checkers.
Will there be exceptions? Of course, as with almost all rule of thumbs, but I've found they're very, very few and far between.
