Are holding games less common?

It's entirely possible as you say that bots have taught us to be aggressive earlier in the game and this results in fewer holding games. It's hard for anyone to know really (esp. me since I wasn't playing then) because we'd need a lot of data that we just didn't have in 2000. I can say personally I see quite a bit of them otherwise this wouldn't have happened.

It could also be a perception bias on your part. In the beginning you may have been paying special attention to those types of position because you weren't sure of the holding game cube actions and checker play. Then as time progressed and you got better and better you stopped caring so much about that type of position because you had it in your pocket.
