In Response To: XG rollouts on Amazon's cloud servers (Frank Berger)

Nack Ballard and David Rockwell are currently undertaking a large project to roll out lots of early-game positions. They're going about it by looking for volunteers to donate spare cycles (I know this because I'm one of the volunteers). The number of trials per move is on the order of 50,000 to 100,000, so it can take days even on a fast machine. In terms of wall clock time, it takes even longer than that, depending on the volunteer (some volunteers have fewer spare cycles and/or slower machines than others).

Obviously, volunteers who work for free are cheaper than a cloud that charges for its services. Still, it would be interesting to know a ballpark figure for doing this project on the cloud, which would be a lot faster in terms of wall clock time because it wouldn't be using spare cycles.
