"Like most people, I've played both variations, as well as the British 'last man standing' craziness, but I have never encountered a variation anyplace where the Captain gets to play twice in a row as Captain. I believe it's pretty much universal that if the Captain fails to become the Box, he goes back to the end of the line."

I think we should rethink this "last man standing" rule (I was not familiar with this term); however, given these circumstances. I think the ruling was fair, which I want to summarize.

Cases (1) and (2) from my original post concerning settlements between the captain and the box are clear, so case (3) dealing with settlements between the captain and one of his partners remains. Imho the ruling should be as follows:

>>If the captain settles his game with one of his partners, he shall immediately go down to the bottom of the line, regardless whether he settles for a profit or a loss.<<

The reasoning is the following:

(a) If the box wins, the box shall remain the box. And since the captain cannot play twice as captain in succession, there is no other possibilty than that he has to go down the queue.

(b) If the box loses, the acting captain gets into the box (as the "last man standing") and again: since the inital captain must not play twice as captain, there is no other way than he has to leave his position, as above.

Nevertheless, we should rethink this "last man standing" rule.

Thanks to everybody for your help!
