In Response To: AI: The x'000 year-old game of competitive backgammon may well have to change... (Timothy Chow)

TC >> There was no money at stake in the game against Oud, prize money in the veterans tournament is very limited, and anyhow Matulovic was too low in the rankings to win. But he was still up to his old tricks, now performing them for free, as art for art's sake.

Funny story!

Yes, that's exactly what I was fishing for with the deliberately non-comprehensive "No financial rewards? (cash prizes) No tournament trophies?".

People don't cheat just for the money or the trophies. Some do it for their ego and self-esteem. Others for elevated recognition amongst their peers, for gravitas, to attain prestige or kudos, others for revenge against those 'orrible sharks, others for their own amusement and the sheer fun of the sh*thousery.

Just in case I am missing some simple solution, what do you think Pendragon might have proposed when he said: 'There has been, and will always be, only one solution. Remove the incentive.'?

Strictly enforcing global sociological re-programming of our human internal reward system from birth? A worldwide ban on even playing the game at all? (That will stop all cheating!) etc. etc.
