Congratulations to Dirk! That is a fantastic achievement!

Here's a link to one previous discussion about playing under 2.0. At the time, I partially agreed and partially disagreed with Stick about the role of money. People achieve amazing things without necessarily receiving significant monetary rewards for doing so. Top 3x3 Rubik's cube solvers are averaging close to 4 seconds. Nigel Richards plays Scrabble endgames better than a bot and won the French Scrabble championship without speaking French. In both cases, there is some prize money, but not a lot. On the other hand, what does seem to be necessary is a vibrant community that keeps the game (or sport, if you prefer that term) going, and a certain amount of money (not all of it prize money) is needed to sustain that community.

See also my comments to Rick Janowski back when the BMAB was just being formed. Initially, the plan was for the highest title to be G1 (PR less than or equal to 3.0), presumably because they thought that so few people would achieve that level that there would be no need for finer gradations beyond that. My advice was ignored at the time, but of course they have since introduced the Super Grandmaster title to correct their mistake.
