I think everyone is motivated by money up to a point. But we're talking about what motivates people to excel, and be the very best. For that, people do need at least enough money so that they won't be distracted by basic economic needs, but beyond that, I think people's motivations are a pretty mixed bag. Again, consider the Rubik's cube. Twenty-five years ago, if you had suggested that within twenty-five years, people would be averaging under 5 seconds for a 3x3x3 solve, I think all the top cubers would have thought you were insane. So what motivated people to excel? It certainly wasn't millions of dollars in prize money. And if you think that there's something different about kids versus adults, it would not be hard to find examples of other fields of endeavor in which adults chose to excel without large prize purses.
