Yes, I agree with Jason. Also, we're not necessarily talking about becoming a "top-tier backgammon player." We're talking about playing a 2.0 PR, which is a narrowly defined task that doesn't require being a "top-tier backgammon player." I'd argue that people reached comparable heights in games like chess and go long before there was as much prize money as there is now. The key requirement is sufficient community support, not individual monetary rewards per se.
