Neil v. Stick - Finals #1

With or without the 5-die the 4 is awkward. I don't like the loose hit combined with any four. That just gives Blue a double shot and the reward (when missed) for Blue is a hard to cover blot on the less than ideal acepoint.
21/16 looks awful so that leaves 11/6 and 13/8 for the five. Candidates 4's are 13/9, 11/7, and 6/2. 11/7 gives White good hitting 6's (plus OK 3's) -- something he'd be happy to accomplish. At least 13/9 followed by a hit gives up Blue's anchor most of the time. 6/2 is the compromise play -- putting a checker where you don't want it but leaving fewer shots and the hit is on a blocked point. Since I don't really like the alternatives, though, I'm going with 13/9.
Now back to the five. Reflexive play for me is 13/8 but how about 11/6? One fewer blot and a spare on the mid- (did I say that??). Six checkers on the 6-point isn't as ugly to me as a fourth checker back (in a roll or two). OTOH the spare on the 11-point is a very nice builder and although White wants to maintain a race lead, certainly Blue's homeboard is nothing to fear.
I spread 'em -- 13/8, 13/9.
