(BR)Sounds like it might have been even worse than last years last game illegal move by Savio.
(NK) I still don't believe Savio's illegal move was intentional, but that is not my point here.
(BR) According to the GammonVillage article by Achim, Sequeira (sp?) made a number of illegal moves, only one of which was caught by Trabolt. Was there not a referee this year? or the same slumbering bear of last year?
(NK) Is it the function of the ref to point out illegal moves as they happen or is it his function just to confirm whether an illegal move was made and what the original position was, if a player suspects and illegal move ? The function of the ref needs to be defined !
(NK) I am very willing to give Mario the benefit of the doubt for the illegal moves. He's been playing Euro tourney BG for at least 20 years and I don't recall any other incidents concerning his credibility. I strongly suspect that he (age in the 60's I think) had trouble reading the dice due to the poor lighting. Poor lighting can also cause one to move a checker to the wrong point. Poor lighting may have also resulted in Lars missing some of those illegal plays.
(BR)The article says also due to poor lighting and the color of the dice the audience in an adjoining room could not read the dice. Seems like this should have been checked prior to the match by the directors.
(NK) Poor lighting for the finals of our game's world championship. This is as shameful and disgraceful as one can imagine. I cannot find polite language to show how I really feel. Amazing that some large lamps or overhead lighting weren't brought in. The hotel is enormous and certainly could obtain proper lighting for the room if given a couple day's notice.
(NK) Why not move the match to a better lit small room ? There are a couple in that end of the hotel ball room area ? Why not use dice that were readable by the viewers and also the commentator ? If this means slightly larger dice, use larger cups and maybe even a baffle box to insure a good mix when shaken.
(NK) Lighting that poor..disgusting..but if no other room was available and given that the commentary was suspended anyhow, why not rope off a 50 sq ft section of the main playing area for the match while not allowing spec (to far to see anyhow) from crowding the ropes or standing on tables. Or, better yet, to keep the players in privacy and quiet, move the match to someone's well lit hotel room.
(BR)In any event, they said the recording of the match was suspended midway due to the inability to read the dice and due to the difficulty in incorporating the illegal moves. And I guess the Falafel commentary, which can be both entertaining and instructive, was neutered.
(BR) Unfortunate all the way around.
(NK) Unless I am missunderstanding something or there's a very different otherside to this story, "unfortunate" is too kind a word.
(BR)Seemingly, fortunately the better player, and the player not making illegal plays, won handily 25-12. As was the case last year where the player making the illegal play did not win.
(BR)Hopefully such glitches as the lighting, the dice, and consideration for the audience and such abuses as repeated illegal plays and an impotent referee will all be much better addressed in the future.
(NK) The main considerations have to be for the two players who are playing for something they will cherish all their lives...the World Backgammon Championship. Good lighting is a must, comfortable chairs desired, ample space on the table, a must, a comfortable room...ie not 80F due to lack of A/C and not super cooled to 60F is a must, dice and checkers that are not hard to see are a must....etc etc.
(BR)I can't imagine such is allowed on such an important stage and that such is sustained when it occurs repeatedly. Or that one is so bold to do it. (Much as the Georgian cheating with the dice -- how bold can one be ??!!!!)
(NK) Once again I strongly suspect that the illegal moves were the result of poor lighting.
(NK) One hopes that the directors, staff, and hotel can due a better job next year, assuming that this was their collective fault, as it sounds to me.
