In Response To: Sounds like another unfortunate Monte Carlo final. (Bill Riles)

Hi Bill,

I heard you were there last year and want to meet you and say hi, we'll have to get together at a future event.

Yes, in the 6-3 roll, all parties are to blame but as far as I know, the match was NOT being filmed, just being sent to the big screen via a camera/video feed, so there was no way it could have been checked later by reviewing a film.

As for the 3-3 roll, you say that Savio "played five threes off a 3-3 roll while bearing off"... if you mean the incident that occurred in this video: http://www.gammonlife.com/tournaments/33video.htm ...please look again, he never tried to play five threes, but he does move the first of his four threes from the 5 point to the 1 point (instead of to the 2 point) which is what caused all the confusion.

And again, there would not have been a video to review after that match since it was just a video feed. My wife or I filmed the above clip off the big screen.

As for: "In this year's final, which I did not attend, I reacted only to the GammonVillage reporting of the "controversial Championship match" and the statements "however, the match was marred by a string of illegal moves by Sequeira, though Trabbi noticed only one" and "the recorder could not keep track of the dice on the big screen and the illegal moves by Sequeira". I inferred the writer had little doubt of nefariousness. Perhaps, I was wrong. However, we all, doubtlessly, have seen such behavior and, unfortunately, must remain ever vigilant while playing."

Sorry I was not there to report this again this year, and besides the fact that I have been quite sick with the flu for almost two weeks now, I had no sponsors to help me with expenses, as I have had in the past. Such a trip costs over $5,000 and GammonLife is a free site.

I don't read GammonVillage but from what you say above, there's a lot that does not make sense to me:

- Firstly, I think that Lars Trabolt is too good of a player not to notice an illegal move, and if you have ever seen him play, you'd know he is totally concentrated in a match, and watches everything very, very closely.

- To say the match was marred with "a string of illegal moves", you need to describe all such illegal moves in your report. Maybe Achim did give some examples? When I was trained to be a newspaper reporter many years ago, I was told that reporters must present only the facts and that these must be backed with proof and quotes. (To be very technical, a newspaper reporter/writer should not give opinions in a news article, but may in a separate editorial on the subject, or for example, he/she may when writing a review about a concert, new movie, book, etc.)

So what exactly were these other "illegal moves"? What did the players and the referee have to say about them after the match? The reader needs to know all sides of the story otherwise it makes someone look like the villain.

Another good question, posed by Chuck Bower, "Why stop recording the match?"

Chuck's right, even if they could not reconstruct the missing moves later, you can still continue recording the match on paper, or even in a new file in Snowie, and then if there's a game with missing moves, you explain what happened, and adjust the game in the file, and in this way, you do get to see and evaluate the rest of the match.
