Yesterday's lesson was to cover the acepoint. I don't think that works very well today, though.

Opp has decent timing for a backgame. Usually the best way to counter is to build an outfield block. With three checkers already behind the more advanced anchor and an open 4-point there might be better GP's. And there's our ever-present 20-pt anchor which is both an asset and a liability.

White has no board and only six "in the zone" so his chances of going forward are at best down the road. What is he going to do next turn?

With all the above cluttering my mind I'm down to two plays: 20/13 and 13/9, 13/10. The former looks 'clean' and seems to fit the roll. The latter OTOH feels a bit forced -- trying to do something with this roll that doesn't quite fit. That play does create a builder for the 4-pt but 'slotting to make' doesn't appeal to my eye since the point 6-below (3-pt) is already made. Someone said "be wary of making points 6-apart". Usually putting a blot in the outfield should have two positive features -- you can cover it or use it as a builder for a better point. Only half of those applies after 13/9.

I'll quote (err, paraphrase) Frank Frigo: "If after careful consideration you are struggling to find the best play, go with your first instinct." OK, easier for him to say. The better you understand this game the more confident you can be in trusting your instinct.

20/13.
