OK to check positions during breaks?

Before the unified international rule set (not capitalized because those are my words, but there is agreement between different national organizations) became official, at the Novi Michigan Summer Championships Rich Munitz held an informal session for people to discuss them. I specifically asked Rich if coaching during a match (on breaks, of course) was allowed and he said 'yes'. Ian's explanation is how I understand it -- that banning the practice isn't enforceable and likely was going on in some instances already.

I don't like this rule but I think it's less annoying personally than the rule says that players may agree that one or both roll on the left hand side of the board. But that's a topic for a different thread....
