Ian summed things up pretty well. You asked about a/the Calcutta. The plan was to auction the final 8 (quarterfinalists) in the (undefeated) Main bracket in the Open right after the Saturday dinner break. As it turned out, not all (maybe only 2) quarterfinalists were determined by then. Bill went ahead and ran the auction anyway to a less than enthusiastic bidding 'crowd'. Basically the lots were the 8 sub-brackets so in some cases as many as three players in a lot.

I don't know about other parts of the world but it seems in the USA, Calcutta auctions are either already dead or on life support.
