It can be difficult to read digits on a Blue checker. The original has 6 checkers on the 6-pt and the variant only 5 checkers there.

One warning flag when not enough checkers are on the board (and you don't notice one in the bearoff tray) is to look at the fraction of games that result in gammons. If a checker is in the bearoff tray then that side will not be listed as losing gammons. (That is not the case in backgammon with a physical board. If the early game proceeds past the point where the setup can be corrected, a checker in the bearoff tray does not negate the possibility of gammons.)
