I only see two reasonable candidates: 3*(2) and 5(2). Let's look at the pluses and minuses.

PoH gives White at least 9 bad numbers (fans), four exellent numbers {26,35}, and one mega joker -- 55. {21,31,51} are good in that they finish the five point homeboard and {54,56} escape. I don't think any White rolls give Blue a double next turn after 3*(2).

5(2) Allows White to escape past the 8-pt with 18 numbers (all 6's and all 4's except 41). Those are good numbers but except for {44,66,45,63} (six rolls) Blue gets a direct shot and getting missed doesn't guarantee Blue won't get another chance at that blot the following roll. On top of that, even when White gets that checker to safety there is still a lot of work to get home, particularly because of the desert in White's outfield.

Is this a classic tactical (PoH) vs strategic (making the 5-pt) conflict?

I think most of Blue's wins come from positions where he owns his 5-pt. I'm grabbing it now.
