Seeing these rollouts, I think I (now) understand what's going on. In the original, blotting on the 5-pt instead of the 4-pt gives White an extra chance when White rolls 55. In either case, hitting accompanied by an ace opens another blot in White's homeboard.

And this latter feature is why the variant is different -- that ace won't create a new blot. Now keeping a five point homeboard as long as possible is the more important part with 6/2, 6/5 having the edge there.

Note I said "I think". Further investigation might well lead to more subtle factors. Regardless, the rollouts show this is a fine line to choose which side to be on.
