Here I'm going to give credit to Mary Hickey ('Mary' is often enough but maybe there are some here who don't know her). This is paraphrased if not completely rewritten:
With opponent on the bar, suppose you make a play that leaves a blot in the homeboard and it gets hit. How do you feel? Now under the same circumstance, suppose you don't leave a homeboard blot and opp enters. How do you feel? Compare those two feelings. This usually applies to hitting an opponent's checker to prevent him/her from making an anchor vs. not hitting and risking him/her making the anchor. But I'm going to apply it here.
I don't want my opponent to enter on my 4-pt so I'm making it, at (moderate) risk of her entering with a hit on my 2-pt, often giving me direct shots coming off the bar.
4(2)
P.S. Does the cube location throw the decision one way or the other? This usually is a factor when the 'risky' play sometimes takes away D+P options whereas the conservative play pretty much guarantees D+P. I wouldn't put it past Stick to post one of these problems, but the thought of that isn't changing my mind here.
