Robertie has a chapter (mini-chapter might be a better description) in his second volume of ...Openings... which discusses 21-pt vs 18-pt. I don't know how cleanly this fits that, but I guess I'll be finding out.

It seems like 24/21 (with the myriad of 4's that can accompany this) is somewhat backgamish committal since it accepts the 21-pt anchor staying put for a long time, short of certain doublet rolls, with 6's efficiently blocked. Blue's timing for any backgame is suspect as of now, and backgames have been referred to as "goal line stands", last defense against getting scored upon. Meanwhile the 18-pt, which also is a long term commitment, gets its shots earlier when timing is a bit easier to maintain.

A lot can happen in the meantime, for sure, but with good coverage of White's homeboard and decent builders for his own, I'll settle for

18(2).
