PoH is an option, as is anchoring combined with some not-so-random deuce.
Is 5-away, 4-away what Michi calls "the stupid score"? Blue's gammon value is high (0.77) when the cube is on 2, but double (+ Take) gives White pretty good cube leverage. With White owning her 20-pt this is not gammonish (not to mention giving White winning chances) so Blue needs to avoid aggressive doubles until that changes.
I shy away from hitting checkers that are already in poor positions. That includes situations like this where White's checker on the 23-pt has its 6's blocked. In tandem with that, the 8-pt has quite a bit of value as an outfield landing pad. OTOH, one thing 2*(2) has going for it is the strong duplication of White's 3's. With that choice Blue usually has a lot of options next turn, including hitting on the 20-pt, making the 18-pt, remaking the 8-pt, and building some other point such as the 3-pt or 7-pt. When those options don't come to fruition, however, the situation can be dire....
The super safe 24/18, 6/4 appears too short-sighted while the bold 24/18, 13/11 gives White too many powerful hit+cover chances. I bet Jason and I discussed this one for a long time :). I'm hitting 4/2* with the deuce. For the 6 I'm going with the "if your opp grabs an advanced anchor, snare one yourself ASAP" common advice:
24/18, 4/2*.
