I didn't see Gnu Backgammon mentioned in the history timeline. Pretty sure for about 10 years (between Snowie and Extreme Gammon) it was the strongest bot. And it was available for free thanks to the effort of many contributors. Then there was its multi-platform availability making Linux and (especially?) Apple OS X users happy.
