Not only didn't I get the Santa Claus reference but also don't get the problem here. OtB I'd likely run 24/13 and save my clock time to waste later.
KG said (and still does say) -- paraphrased: "before you end your turn consider at least one alternative."
24/18, 13/8. Quite pure but gives opp oodles of attacking rolls, even so badly outboarded.
24/18, 6/1*. If you really want to make the 18-pt then this looks like the way to do it, but leading in the race the 18-pt is as much a liability as an asset.
13/2*. Maybe at Gammon Go, but I don't think I do this even then.
8/2*, 6/1*. voluntarily giving up the 8-pt when not owning the 2-pt usually has more compensation than I see here. Seems like a play that often puts White right back in the game.
Sometimes simple is best. Often when the obvious play is wrong the alternative really jumps out after considering it. That hasn't happened to me here. I'll stick with simple and prepare to get schooled.
