Although the Siegel Ty isn't ABT, the reg. fee in USA (ABT) tournaments has grown out of the USBGF charging directors (passed on to tournament participants) for the ABT association, record keeping, etc.

In the "good old days" (just talking about USA, not sure about Europe or Britain) the directors' costs/expenses were covered by the rakes in various events. Now they rake the same fraction AND charge a reg. fee on top of it.

Meanwhile inflation (and greed??) has driven up hotel rates and travel costs, but you can't blame that on backgammon promotion/direction.

I've been told by directors over the years that many were just happy to break even while others wanted to make a profit, in some cases even enough to make a living or at least contribute a significant amount to annual income.

I'm pretty sure you're still friends with Ben and even Rory. :) Have you discussed this with them? I'd be curious as to their responses.
