Ben, good to hear from one of the active (and I add, most astute) current ABT directors.

What my post (and somewhat a theme of this thread) indicates is a lack of understanding of the costs/expenses of running a tournament, and the path our input dollars take working their way through the system. I don't think this is new; it's existed since I started playing 50 years ago.

The 'registration fee' at USA tournaments was the exception for decades but now seems to have become the norm. It may be an unrelated coincidence that it has temporally paralleled the involvement of the USBGF in USA backgammon tournaments.

There are (almost) always two sides to this kind of transaction -- those putting up $ and those taking it in, and I get that "taking it in" includes the pass through of most of it. We players obviously have (or at least the opportunity of having) a good idea of what we're putting in, and appreciate the directors/organizers posting of rakes to allow figuring the expected Return on Investment. Many players couldn't care less what the financial RoI expectation is. Others take it to a different level. AFAIC all have the right to figure that and express it.

Thanks for responding and exposing some concerns, challenges, and details from the other side of the table. Such transparency increases the mutual enjoyment of this game, particularly at the tournament level.
