Good to hear from you, Timothy. A couple counter-thoughts to your post, without deep conviction:

1) Playing vs. the opponent is a vast, wide open desert AFAIK. How much difference can it make? That's a debate that has been argued before, but it seems obvious that it would have an effect. The magnitude is unknown. And presumably the solution is unknown but hopefully someone is thinking about how to go about it more than just speculating.

2) I've talked to someone who toyed with AlphaZero playing BG. His conclusion was that it's not a natural fit like so many other games have been. At least he wasn't able to make progress.
