4's are in short supply and one must be played this turn. That doesn't change much with how Blue plays the 5 die, though. (I think) 13/8 is typically thematic in these holding games when leading the race. Having said that, 8/3 puts a checker in a decent position for the bearoff.

I often wonder about building the homeboard in these positions where the race is close enough that hitting might become a asset. That would make 8/3, 6/2 and 8/3, 5/1 good candidates here, but maybe it's a bit early for that concern?

Six checkers on a point isn't particularly attractive in positions with considerable potential contact and limited flexibility. IMO, avoiding that takes precedence over getting down to two checkers on the midpoint.
