As uncomfortable (TMP) as the obvious play appears, what is the alternative?
A) Don't cover the 4-pt? It's not like the deuce (in any combination with the ace) is going to transform this game. Only if you knew your opp would fan otherwise (9/36 rolls) would anyone(?) not cover.
B) Create builders for the remaining homeboard points? 9/8 doesn't even really do that, and the 9-pt is 6-away from the 3-pt making it valuable on its own. 8/7 certainly does, without major concession of a valuable point since the 8-pt is 6-away from the 9-pt. White gets 6/36 flyshots from the bar, and Blue better be entering immediately since there are more blots to sweep up, significantly increasing gammon threats (note that in this scenario White owns the cube so those threats more likely lead to crushing recubes than play-ons). Maybe I'd make this promising play at matchscores where gammon losses don't subtract anything, but here it's just my 2nd choice.
I'm staying with the stodgy alternative, awaiting the imaginative solution in a day or so.
6/4, 13/12.
