Couldn't the players agree to this at the beginning of the match?

It's not a good idea, for many reasons, for players to be deciding between themselves not to play by the same tournament rules that apply to everyone else and to themselves. The Danish Backgammon Federation rule state this explicitly; I believe the ABT rules ought to.
