Hope the above is clickable. Short of doing an actual GNU-bg benchmark (which everyone recommends but no one can tell you where to get that info, because most of the time it doesn't exist...) this IMO is about as close as you can get.
As mentioned previously on this forum (or was it at GU?), the Turions are only about 70% as fast as equally clocked recent Intels.
There is also the issue of SSE instruction usage which GNU-bg lags behind Sisoft Sandra (I'm pretty sure).
My impression of the general attitude amongst 95% of computer users (and about that fraction of salespeople, online or elsewhere) is that CPU speed doesn't matter. Thus systems loaded with either Turions and Core 2 duos can compete at similar cost levels not on their CPU characteristics but on other performance issues (harddrive, network, screensize, etc.) Best Buy (what a misnomer!) has gone into the habit of not even telling you the CPU model number for most of its newspaper advertised laptop systems. (They do tell you the model# for desktops. Why the inconsistency?)
The bottom line is that you didn't give us a choice. Certainly there are faster and slower laptops on the market but it would be unreasonable for us to recommend a $3000 laptop if your constraint is $600. I think you need to give us more info.
