I was wondering similarly myself.

In golf the situation of not knowing how many will get paid until after the tournament starts is also an issue.

Typically (at least a template for US PGATour) is 120 players begin but halfway through the tournament the field is pared to low 60 plus ties. Those who fail this 'cut' get nothing but everyone who makes it past this hurdle gets a check. The final (cashing) field is a minimum of 60 but no set maximum (realistically 0-15 additional players). But, for example, if 59 players are at a certain score or better and 15 are tied for 60th, those 15 split a lot more than a pre-determined 60th place prize.

I suspect if the formula is not online somewhere that the PGA Tour would respond to an e-mail on how it's computed.
