I'd assume that ESPN were recording during the ad breaks and showing you as-live, time-lapsed footage.

Our commercial ITV station has had lots of complaints about missing incidents during ad breaks in Formula 1 races. I think there was much joy among the afficionados when (ad-free) BBC won back the rights recently.
