I was watching that competition, too. I don't see why they couldn't have just awarded two gold medals (and one bronze). In wrestling, for example, they give two bronzes (I'm guessing that means the two losing semifinalists don't have to wrestle each other).
First off, it's a frickin' subjective sport to begin with. Realistically two gymnasts could be within a tenth or two (maybe even farther apart) and no one REALLY know who performed better.
At least Liukin already had a gold in the all-around -- the most prestigious of individual medals. If this technicality had cost her the only gold she would win in these (her last?) Olympics, that would have been a huge misjustice.
Gymnastics, get a clue!
