Good to see it's not just here in the Midwest where this happens. I give the cashier 10.08 on an 8.08 purchase and s/he gives me back my 8 cents plus $1.92. At the point I give the cashier all the change and and ask for a dollar. Then I get a funny look.

And people want to know why kids need to learn hand arithmetic when calculators cost less than $10. Do the math....
