An easier way.....yep !

Exactly...and I like Tom's idea of a few random numbers being tossed in to increase randomness..ie change the seed. 4 dice could be rolled and the 4 numbers plugged in to get a random seed in public and there should be no doubt that the draw is 100% random, noting source code and program would be available and the prgram can be tested etc.
The program would spit out the first round pairings (just like in Swiss) and these could be posted in 3 or 4 places in the room (read this Madison) rather than just one place which results in crowding, bumping, etc etc.
Posting the pairings is much better than the VERY annoying announcement of first round pairings which is distracting to those who've allready started play and sometimes results in players not hearing who their opp is anyhow.
Of course, once the pairings are done, the draw sheet can be filled in just like now, but with considerably less delay.
Delay also results at big events as players crowd around one draw sheet, often with names small and hard to read, trying to see who their first round opp is. By doing a quick computer draw resulting in first round pairings, we might see some large events start play as much as half an hour earlier. This means the day's play can finish earlier and there's less chance of someone finishing at 1:30 AM having to play at 10 AM Sunday etc etc, and equally important, most staff members, who do work really hard, can get to bed a half hour earlier.
Why is a public (or at least somewhat public) draw done ? Well, years ago, there it was strongly suspected, that a director who played in his event was given a favorable draw. It was also strongly suspected, (even more evidence from more than once) that players bought in the Calcutta by a team involving the director, a staff member or two, and a couple of "friends" were given favorable draws, byes etc etc.
Did the above scumbaggery really occur ? I don't know, but I do think the Calcutta BS did. When you see me state that directors and staff should NEVER buy players in the Calcutta, PERIOD you understand why.
Maybe the above didn't occur, lets hope it was just coincidence. It wasn't me who initially suspected debauchery, but others who brought it to my attention.
However, there's always suspicion that those who can control things can steer things to be better for theirselves. SO..by having a public draw, directors can make sure there's not even an inkling of suspicion. By staying out of the Calcutta, directors can make sure that they aren't suspected of giving someone they own a favorable ruling (I've seen that..well said director basically "poo-pooed" and obvious infraction by the player he owned, and another director didn't award penalty points when his players was late by too much and should've lost 1 or 2 penalty points).
Fortunately, today's ABT directors aren't the one's who I believe were suspected of a bit of shady activity in the past. Today's ABT directors are, in general very honest and trustworthy. They do make the occasional missinterpretation or mistake, but they certainly, for the most part, do a good job.
