This makes we wonder -- did this guy ever pay off his debts to the BG players? I have a good idea about the answer.

When you screw up (he actually cashed checks at casinos??!!) this badly and then make excuses, you're not the kind of person who feels the responsibility/integrity to make things right. You've already pretty much made your intentions known. The path is greased for your exit. And you can always find other honest people out there to scam.
