a Core 2 Duo... anything special I need to do to take advantage of this when running GNUBG?

Settings... Options
Click the "Other" tab
Eval Threads: enter the number of threads (processors) your computer can handle. i.e. 2 for a dual-core, 4 for a quattro, 4 for a duo dual-core, ...
