Using a Core 2 Duo

I'm certainly old-fashioned in many ways. I still run GNU-bg 0.14. I open two instances of GNU-bg which defaults to one running on each processor. I can run two different positions, or the same position (but half the candidates on one processor and half on the other). When I do this I make sure that the seed on both instances is the same.

When the first 0.16 came out I did some ROLLOUT benchmarking and found that 0.14 was ~10% faster than 0.16. I'm pretty sure the engines themselves are very similar. But I haven't b'm'ed the latest 0.16 so I can't say if that speed advantage still exists.

I'd be happy to hear from others that my old fashioned method is hurting me, but until then I'm sticking with it.
