Neil replies: We all do. My appologies to all involved here. The staff came to me to ask my opinion of what to since no one wanted to give a bye to put one of us three into the money. Thus I said lets play BG for it ! All agreed, noting that a 3 player RR is over in two matches 50% of the time, three matches 25% of the time, and has to be redone the other 25% of the time. There's only 1 chance in 16 of having to go for a third RR, but you can see what we wanted to time it. We did err in using 2+12 for the TCF however, noting that I, who also doesn't have huge clock experience, will admit that he felt a bit rushed..clearly more rushed than having 18 min reserve time when playing a 9 pt match.
I was under the impression that we were definately supposed to start the finals, and noted that the conso draw was being set up. It was later, as I was winding down for bed with a triple vodka and pill that I realized the better method of just having us 4 play rd 10.
But lets say Steve had lost in rd 9..then he'd be 8-1 and me,Matt,Tim and Brad 7-2. How could we set up playoffs then ? Noting that Steve is entitled to one bye only then as he has 1 less loss ? ie you can't under the criteria used then put Steve into the finals and have the 4 7-2's playdown to the other finalist while I honestly think that would be the fairest method noting that then Steve at 8-1 would be playing a 9-2 for the title in a single match !!
It is not straighhtforward to solve all possible playoff combos that can arise. With Steve at 8-1 and me,Matt,Tim, and Brad at 7-2, if you have rd 10, someone is getting a really valuable bye. (obviously someone who didn't get a bye earlier !) Then if Steve wins he's 9-1, bye is 8-2 and other winner is 8-2 and things are perfect for semi and final. If Steve loses he'd be 8-2, bye is 8-2, and Steve's victor is 8-2 as is the other victor and now we have a perfect situation with 4 8-2's ! But OMG giving someone a bye at that point is giving him a bye into the money !!
Thus better if Steve had lost in rd 9 would have been to put him into the finals and have me,Brad(who Steve beat in the real T in rd 9),Tim, and Matt at 7-2 play down to a finalist. It does seem fair to have someone 9-2 playing someone 8-1 in the finals.
Note that in the main event, Steve who was 9-0 played Tim who was 9-2 (giving him a win for the bye he won in the mini-RR) in the finals and Tim only had to beat him once.
As I've said many times I, like UBK, prefer all Swiss. But many players/directors want to see a clear cut finals match etc etc and all Swiss could linger on an extra round.
But all Swiss is my CLEAR preference. I'd like to see this event be all Swiss and no consolation and once you lose your third match you are out. Bye's would not count as a win in the final totals. So lets say that I get knocked out in rd 10 and am 7-3. If I had an earlier bye, I'm actually 6-3 and those who finish 7-3 will place ahead of me. Note that my method would not have a 8,4,2,1 payoff as I strongly feel that someone who goes 10-2 and wins doesn't deserve twice as much as someone who went 9-3. Said 9-3 doesn't deserve twice what the 8-3 gets either.
