I agree wholeheartedly with those controls. I've played 5 matches over the last two local tournaments with 2.5 mins and 15 seconds. The experience I've had is that neither opponent in any of the 5 matches came close to running out of time, which indicates that 2 min. per point would probably suffice. I also found that with that extra 3 seconds of grace, i.e. 15 seconds vs. the current ABT rule of 12 seconds, a much higher percentage of shakes, rolls, and moves can be completed in 15 seconds rather than 12.
Re cocked dice, somebody here several weeks ago had a really good suggestion that I think would make a good rule...player rolling the cocked dice says "cocked dice", punches his clock, his opponent then acknowledges and punches his clock, therefore player on roll has had his grace period reset. I forgot who posted that idea, it was posted here on this site.
If I were king, I'd make it 2 min./15 sec in Open and 2.5 min/15 sec in advanced.
And people, please, what is the big freaking deal about having your own clock? We're talking $40. Heck, you don't even need four dice, so you could in theory save $10+ on precision dice. Um, how much do we spend for a single day at a tournament?
TDs put enough of their own time and money into running a tournament. Players, bring your own clocks.
Don't want to buy a clock? Fine, make every match such that EITHER player may insist on using a clock, and I'd predict you'll find a large number of players will get a clock- they'll want to have the opportunity to play with a clock in less pressured situations so that they'll be ready when the heat is on, so they will have a strong incentive to buy a clock. But nobody is forced to buy a clock. The TDs could have a couple extra clocks for mandatory clocking of semis and finals if necessary.
