3 finalists two more equitable ways, IMHO

In Response To: 3 finalists (Gregg Cattanach)

Method 1) each of the 3 finalists gets 2/9 of the money and the two that don't get the bye play the semi's for 1/9 more of the money. The remaining 2/9 is awarded to the finals winner. Now each of 3 players has exactly 1/3 equity regardless of which one draws the bye. The winner will receive either 4/9 or 5/9 of the pot ..ie the winner's expectancy is 1/2 the pot. If the player who got the bye loses the finals he will get 2/9 of the pot, just the same as the player who didn't get the bye and lost the semis. This is completely fair since they will have exactly the same match record (3-1 in the 24 player bracket)

The only problem with the above is that the quarterfinal match (to get into the final 3) is worth as much to win or lose as is the finals match and is worth twice what the semis is worth. Traditionally and in ABT pt payout format the quarters are worth the same difference between winning and losing as the semis while the finals are worth twice..ie 4,2,1 so with that in mind, here's.....

Method 2) Each of 3 finalists gets 1/6 of the pot and the semi match is worth 1/6 and the finals is worth 1/3. Note once again that each players' equity is exactly 1/3 and that if the guy getting the bye loses the finals he receives the same 1/6 share of the pot as the guy who lost the semi, again noting they both are 3-1 (24 players). Lets say that the guy who gets the bye wins the finals now. He gets 1/2 (1/6 + 1/3 of the pot)while the guy losing the finals gets 1/3 (1/6 + 1/6) which is, as it should be, twice the 1/6 the guy who loses in the semis gets. The issue with method 2) is that if the guy who doesn't get the bye wins the T, he gets 2/3 of the prize pool. This will happen half the time. Is this a major issue ? It is OK for me, when one notes that under that scenario, the winner played an extra match and beat BOTH of the other finalists.

Currently I prefer method 2) to method 1) since the finals is worth twice what the quarter and semis are, just as we all are used to seeing. Method 1) is fine except that that the quarters really are worth lots too much !

I'd like to see method 2) become the standard method of dealing with 12,24,or even 48 players in single elim JP type events. Note that I can easily make either of these methods work just fine for a 48 player event with a conso. (3 get paid in main and 3 in conso).

Just a couple ideas for dealing with 12,24, 48 players without byes. Now if we have 22 or 23 players...it seems better to me to just give one or two lucky souls a bye and if a side JP event, the byes can even be auctioned off. This seems lots better than having a bit more than half the field get a bye in a 23 player event using a 32 bracket.

Just my opinion and I trust the considerable talent here will read and dissect.
