Clocks

I used to be against clocking of backgammon matches, thinking that the protocols would be annoying. I also believed that the presence of clocks would introduce new skills not related to figuring out the best moves, which I thought would be a Bad Thing.
I also didn't see that slow play was a huge problem--though I was in some sense victimized by a slow player in a relatively big money round of a big tournament, 1989. I lost the match, ultimately my fault, of course, but I do blame the loss partly on the guy's pathologically slow play, which was highly irritating both to me and to the organizers, one of whom lambasted him about it in print. Regardless, that was a real one-time event for me.
Now I'll reserve judgment about clocks until I actually play a backgammon match with a clock, which I've never done. I played tournament chess intensively for a few years back in the 70s, so I'm not clock-naive, just backgammon-clock-naive.
