A "new" idea (?)

I dunno that where the loss happens should matter all that much, but the idea of a "tournament" presupposes advancement based on winning your previous and current match.
The movie the quick and the dead comes to mind. The tournament was a series of gunfights to the death. Hard to have two losses there!
Or a camelot type jousting tournament.
The ABT can utlimately determine who was the most consistent player on the tour that year, and one early loss at a random tournament won't necessarily ruin your whole year.
Chess tournaments have draws, so that must be more complex, but backgammon is more like a gunfight. Always a winner and a loser.
The Swiss thing is fun though. Neil and I both lost in the first round this year, as did a few other excellent players. We both made the "playoffs".
I won in 2004, and my record after 3 matches was 1-2!
I am not sure that formats like Swiss Movement which favor stronger players encourage participation as much. If only the best can win, there is little incentive for the weak to show up.
